Stephen Currys 46 points lift Warriors to record-breaking win over Grizzlies before delirious Oracle Arena crowd

Witha resounding win over the Memphis Grizzlies, the Golden State Warriors secured their place as one of the greatest basketball teams of all time with their 73rd win of the regular season, eclipsing the previous mark of 72 held by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls.

Stephen Curry poured in 46 points to lift the Warriors to a 125-104 win before a delirious sellout crowd of 19,596 at Oracle Arena.

Normally by the 82nd game of the regular season, the post-season seedings are set and the starters are resting in preparation for the playoffs, with fan support lackluster if they even show up at all. But every seat was filled on Wednesday night as the Warriorseclipsed Michael Jordans Bulls in the history books, a record previously thought unbreakable.

Its a great way to finish off what was an amazing regular season, said Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who happened to be a reserve guard on that Bulls team. I just told our guys I never in a million years would have guessed that that record would ever be broken. I thought it was like [Joe] DiMaggios hit streak.

The arena was covered in blue and gold and roaring for the home team, cheers that were even louder for each of Currys 10three-pointers. That lifted him to 402 for the season, just another metric that makes him arguably the best shooter in the leagues history. Consider the previous record was 286 set by Curry himself last year.

I told him today, Good luck breaking that one next year, Kerr had said before the game. The fact that he just obliterated the last record is just amazing. I have a feeling that this one might stand for a while.

Golden State stormed to an early lead behind Currys hot shooting, heading into the locker room at half time leading by 20 points. The defending champions put on a strong display of their greatest strengths: a versatile offense and democratic ball movement embodying their strong team chemistry.

We have our certain identity of how we play: obviously shooting at a high level, moving the ball, Curry said afterward. Everybody has a role, and we have fun doing it.

Despite solid offense across the board the Warriors had more turnovers than usual (17), but they made up for it with more than 40 rebounds and 35 assists.

The last time Golden State took on the Grizzlies at home they won by 50 points but when they last faced off in Memphis the Warriors seemed to struggle, pulling off a fourth-quarter comeback to win by a single point.

Memphis rallied after half time, but Golden State continued to outscore them and play with efficiency. The outcome no longer in doubt, Curry exited the game with 46 points in less than 30 minutes of playing time.

Days before the final game of the season, many had doubts that the Dubs would be able to make it to 73 wins, after losses in three of their last 13 games two of which were at home, their first defeats at Oracle Arena this season and having to face the No2 San Antonio Spurs twice in their final four match-ups. Even the data website FiveThirtyEight couldnt make up their mind. In less than a week they went from long shots to having a 93% chance at beating the record.

But Curry and his Warriors the kind of team that can make a last-second, 32ft overtime game-winner look effortless and celebrate before their teammate even shoots the ball seem to defy all odds.

Athletes and celebrities took to Twitter to congratulate the Warriors, including President Barack Obama a lifelong Chicago Bulls fan.

President Obama (@POTUS) April 14, 2016

Congrats to the @Warriors, a great group of guys on and off the court. If somebody had to break the Bulls’ record, I’m glad it’s them.

Mike [Jordan] told me at all-star, Go win the record. Go get the record. If yall dont win this record, Im going to be hot and Im blaming you, power forward Draymond Green told ESPN earlier this week.

But not every former Bulls player had their blessing. Scottie Pippen, who played small forward on the Bulls team with the previous all-time record, said they would sweep the Warriors in the NBA finals if the teams had faced off in their prime.

Kerr assured the media that there was no bad blood. During a pre-game presser he said that he would be wearing his Pippens socks during the game. No lie. Pippen tweeted a hat tip after the game.

All-time record notwithstanding, the season was filled with eye-popping statistical milestones and several firsts for the Warriors. After opening the season with a 24-game win streak, Golden State snapped the Spurs streak of being undefeated at home, beating them for the first time in San Antonio since 1997.

Stephen Curry has double-digit three-pointers for the sixth time in his career (fourth time this season). He has 402 threes this season

Curry had a league-best 40 games with 30 points or more in a season and smashed records for three-pointers in a game and points in a quarter. Entering the game Curry broke his own single-season record for threes and has hit a three in an NBA-record152 straight games.

Despite putting up impressive numbers, Curry captured the spirit of Golden States fan base during last years championship series when he said that stats dont really matter.

Though the Warriors lost the fewest games during a regular season, the rare losses were hard to stomach. Kobe Bryants struggling Los Angeles Lakers beat them by double digits to score one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, holding the notorious Splash Brothers to a combined 1-for-18 for three-pointers. A close loss to the Boston Celtics ruined the Dubs 54-game winning streak at home. And just a few games shy of making history, the Warriors blew a 17-point lead and fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves another team that didnt even come close to making the playoffs after forcing the game into overtime.

You have so much media attention and everybody talking about breaking the record and you lose focus a little bit, Kerr said after the loss to the Timberwolves.

No matter how gutting the loss, the Warriors didnt lose any consecutive games and they never lost to the same team twice both firsts in NBA history.

All that and the Warriors werent even the hottest ticket in the league Wednesday night. Tickets to see five-time champion Bryant play his final game in Los Angeles were selling for twice as much on the secondary market hours before tip-off. Bryant scored 60 points in his final game.

While commentators and the media have been buzzing about the possibility of a new record, the coaching staff at least tried to give the impression that it wasnt their top priority. Kerr encouraged players to rest if needed, with center Andrew Bogut sitting out on Saturday during their razor-thin win against the Grizzlies.Days before the final game Andre Iguodala spoke at Stanford with Arianna Huffington about the importance of sleep for maximum performance.

I know it can be bad for fans, you buy a ticket and one of the star players is out, but that rest might make a difference come playoff time, Iguodala said.

With the regular season over, all eyes are on the playoffs. Golden State who secured a playoff spot in February is predicted to blow past theHouston Rockets in the first round and appeared poised for a showdown with the Spurs in the Western Conference finals.

We love winning, Curry said. We love to compete and to push ourselves, and thats what pushed us to the opportunity we had tonight, and hopefully well continue this weekend when we get the playoffs started.
